Rich Strike beat 80-1 odds at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, with jockey Sonny Leon somehow riding the horse to victory after being near the back of the pack during the final turn.

Few people expected Rich Strike to win the biggest race of the Triple Crown. Indeed, ESPN noted that the horse “wasn’t even in the Derby until Friday, when Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas scratched Ethereal Road, making room for the colt who had just two previous wins in his career.” And once the race started, it seemed that the horse wasn’t going to make a spectacular showing.
As the pack rounded the final turn and headed into the stretch, he and jockey Leon were far from the lead. Somehow, though, they managed to escape from being boxed in and sped past every other horse to the finish line. Just an incredible win.
The upset victory was so massive that The New York Post described it as “the second-biggest upset in the race’s 148-year history.”
