Gotham Knights is sending out some mixed signals and getting some mixed reviews. They have earned them all. Especially the bad ones.
Gotham Knights is an upcoming video game set in Gotham City. Developed WB Games Montréal, the same developers behind Batman: Arkham Origins, the game has been in the works for quite some time now. Right off the bat, pun intended, I have some bad feelings.
WB Games Montréal, like previously stated, was the studio responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins. Origins was a prequel in the series of Arkham games and it was underwhelming to say the least. It was too obvious that the execs at Rocksteady, the developers for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, were busy making Arkham Knight but had to churn out an Arkham game fast so they offshored it to this other company. Arkham Origins is just “eh” and not much more of that. This is the reason I have had a bad feeling about Gotham Knights, it is made by a company who has consistently made “eh” games.
However, there is some hope. The game was just sent out to a multitude of people to play test it and give there reviews before it releases later this month, and people say the story is great. The interactions between the characters alone are pretty sweet. Not to mention, the nefarious acts that Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, The Court of Owls, and so many more classic villains are up to leads me to believe that the story is going to be a blast. “What won’t be a blast?” I hear you ask; The gameplay.
It is as if WB Games Montréal took a look at the major flop that was the Avengers game and said, “Lets do that!” The Avengers game died before it even released, everyone could tell by the gameplay that was released that it was going to be a grindy, xp farm mess. Just the fact that the enemies have a level system is enough to show me that the combat in this game is going to be excruciatingly boring. This hypothesis of mine turned out to be the truth when they actually released gameplay. It looks to be a massive wallop of slow, sluggish punches and kicks. It is going to be repetitive as all hell, especially with the level system. Is it so much to ask for? Does grinding for levels and xp need to be in every single video game? And if there is a grind, does it have to be painfully boring? Or can it be fun? Well, it doesn’t look like that’ll be the case with Gotham Knights.
Also, what fun is a Batman game without Batman?! I have suspicions that they will add him in a DLC that’ll be incredibly overpriced. Speaking of, if you are a current gen console holder (Ps4 or Xbox One) like I am than I am sorry to say but you and me will be missing out on the release of this $70 next-gen only game. It is unbelievable and it should be illegal to make a game that is going to be sluggish and grindy mess and looks like it could run on an iphone 5c locked to only be played on a Ps5 or Xbox Series X/S while also robbing them of $70 dollars!
Turns out this game isn’t sending me mixed signals! It’s sending some signals that I am picking up loud and clear! This game is going to be a total turd! I am calling it here! I hope I’m wrong but by golly I have a strong feeling I won’t be.
(Here is a trailer for the game that looks super cool but has no relevance to how the game will actually look or feel when released. I am putting it here as a lesson, to show everyone that a cool cinematic trailer does not mean the game will be good.)
