Full disclosure? Most of us saw this coming. It’s a classic government move. If you’re not giving the tax man his money through a gas tax, he’ll just find another way to get it. Call it a “Road Usage Fee” or some such nonsense. The Beatles pretty much nailed it on the head with their song “Tax Man” and the lyrics –
(If you try to sit, sit) I’ll tax your seat.
(If you get too cold, cold) I’ll tax the heat.
(If you take a walk, walk) I’ll tax your feet.
More and more states are ready to fire up their new tax ideas to replace the lost revenue on gas taxes. It’s coming. So, what do you get out of the deal? Well, rest easy. You’re EV has a battery that did some legit damage to the environment. Good chance those ingredients were mined in some horrible conditions too! Now factor in the cost of replacing that battery when it taps out or you get into a minor accident. Here’s little info from cars.com If an EV is no longer under warranty or if its battery is damaged in an accident and isn’t covered by insurance, Recurrent estimates the out-of-pocket cost for a replacement ranges from $5,000 to $20,000. The total cost largely depends on the pack, size and manufacturer of the battery. Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark.
What is the upside to driving an EV? Is there one? It’s not a financial win? It’s not an environmental or moral victory? And while you’re waiting for your EV to charge? I am driving. Anywhere I want. And that’s how I like it.
