You know one of the best ways to keep every day special is to just keep making things up, and for sometime, Old School Star Wars Fans have stretched out May the Fourth (Star Wars Day) into their own trilogy celebration.
Some like to celebrate the next day with on May 5 (Revenge of the Fifth), but Cinco de Mayo parties tend to overshadow that one. Ergo, we have today: May 6 as the more pun-worthy Revenge of the Sixth. Hence, an original trilogy of geeky fun, with this final day devoted to the Empire.
Before we muddle through another week of madness on this planet, let’s celebrate Revenge of the Sixth with some Star Wars tinged melodies.
Galactic Empire “Duel of the Fates”
Did you know there’s been a Star Wars themed heavy metal band around for about the past six year? Well, you do know. They have been touring and gathering more faithful fans, bringing a new epic edge to The Force.
Meco “Star Wars Theme and Other Galactic Funk”
It was 1977 and Star Wars still new. Still pure. Still freakin’ amazing. Then a music producer known as Meco (real name Domenico Monardo) created his funky Star Wars Theme played on radio stations and in discotheques everywhere. Meco passed away last year at age 83, but thanks be to him The Funk is with Us, always. Put this on in the background and just vibe.
Syd Masters and the Swing Riders “Cantina Band”
In 2011, the Simon Pegg movie Paul was released, about a couple of sci-fi nerds who run across and escaped Roswell-style alien. The movie was just “meh” but much of it was filmed in a town I used to live as a reporter, Las Vegas, N.M. They used a regional Western Swing group to perform a cool cover of a very familiar tune, and it was fantastic. Syd Masters and his band are still going strong, too. I don’t know why the best recording on YouTube features a picture of Pegg and his pups…but it still sounds great.
The Evil Genius Orchestra “The Imperial March”
This cool compilation of lounge jazz style Star Wars music came out in 1999, and that’s when I bought this album. You know what? It’s still cool, and if you need to sit around the lava pit with a Blue Milk themed cocktail, go for it! You have my permission.
“Weird Al” Yankovic “The Saga Begins”
You think I wouldn’t end this list with one from the Master himsel? Sure, I could have picked “Yoda” from Weird Al, but his “American Pie” parody is just a masterpiece in great lyric writing.
No matter how far the Star Wars universe continues to spiral with and over-glut of useless non-cannon shows and movies, let’s enjoy our Revenge of the Sixth with some cool music memories. Sooner or later we’ll have to return to that wretched hive of scum and villany know as Earth.
