This past week has been packed with over-hyped events from San Diego Comic-Con to the Paris Olympics. While everyone is watching and arguing over these “world uniting” sports, and turning my favorite Avenger (Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man) into Doctor Doom (sorta), a couple of really cool series and movie trailers dropped in the horror comics world:
Hellboy: The Crooked Man
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the first Hellboy movie adaptation that has creator Mike Mignola’s approval. He hasn’t liked any of the past movies, as they took too many liberties away from the original source material. This story is based directly on a his Dark Horse Hellboy series of the same name that goes back to 2008. What I like about this, besides it being Hellboy, is it is being released by an independent film company (Ketchup Entertainment) with no use of AI and practically no CGI. The budget was only around $20 to $25 million, and the actor isn’t mega well-known outside of geek circles (Jack Kesy).
I liked the Guillermo del Toro ones just fine, but after seeing this dark trailer, I’m ready for it. There’s no release date yet, but it is supposed to hit theatres this year.
Uzumaki
Horror manga master Junji Ito has created some of the most frightening and imaginative stories in the horror genre, such as Tomie and Sensor. There have been several adaptions of his stories in anime form, including the popular Netflix series Japanese Tales of the Macabre. His manga Uzumaki is getting a new four-episode adaption coming Sept. 28 on Adult Swim. Uzumaki is one of the most disturbing and page-turning mangas I’ve read, and deals with the haunting of a coastal town by a spiral (yes, a spiral), that becomes a source of madness for some residents.
It’s been a hot summer with not only baking sun, but heated debates, and looking forward to a cool fall and even cooler geeky horror is a good source of relief.
