Random Reads: End-of-Summer Easy Reading

Once again, it’s time to check in on everyone and make sure you’re picking up a book just for the sheer joy of reading!

Summer went by way too fast, I understand. There is still time to get through some easy-reading and very entertaining books, like these three suggestions:

Man, Fuck This House by Brian Asman

This is one I admittedly picked up out of sheer morbid curiosity for the title alone. Ironically, if it weren’t for the title on the top of each pate, the F-Bomb doesn’t appear except one time I can recall..and in a perfectly timed part of the story. The family who moves into this particular abode isn’t really likable, but trust me, you want to find out what’s happening. It has some fun takes on some classic horror tropes, and one of the big reveals is a little bit derivative of scary animated movie. I won’t tell you which one, because I’d be revealing a big twist. Still, it is darkly humorous in some places and genuinely horrifying in others. This is an easy-to-race-through book you can grab a tasty beverage and sit down with for an evening read.

The Book of Bill by Alex Hirsch

I know what you’re thinking. I’m actually recommending a tie-in book for a Disney animated show? Yes, I am. First of all, Gravity Falls was the last great original Disney cartoon, and creator Alex Hirsch realizes its original audience is now primarily young adults with a warped sense of humor. This book brings back one of the quirkiest evil entities in animated television, with the story of his …..Life? Death? In-Between? … all while casually trying to take over your life and help you learn how to overthrow the world with sometimes hilarious, sometimes very unsettling content. My daughters, one teen and one in her 20s, raced to get a copy of this book, and I borrowed it soon after. This will make you miss the days Disney’s original shows were actually clever, and since Gravity Falls premiered 10 years ago this week, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic.

The Usagi Yojimbo Saga: Book 1 by San Sakai

I have to get a comic recommendation in there from one of the consistently great writers Usagi Yojimo creator, Stan Sakai. I you haven’t gotten into the world of the Samurai rabbit influenced by everything from the films of Akira Kurosawa to Sakai’s pal Sergio Argones, this anthology is the best place to start. Action, adventure, fantasy and whimsy that can only come from imagination of a guy as cool as Stan Sakai. You might not be able to read this entire volume in one sitting, but you can easily read a story or two a day for a wonderfully adventurous escape.

I hope you’re summer wasn’t too unbearable, but we need to get away from reality for a bit. So sit down and delve into the pages of a book before the first leaves of fall hit the ground.
