Move over hamburger helper, creamy hamburger steak with mushrooms and onions

Fall has arrived and thoughts turn to comforting warm and filling dishes. Ditch the hamburger helper, this simple hamburger steak in a creamy mushroom and onion sauce will hit the spot, its a great weeknight meal, that comes together in less than 30 minutes. Here’s how to make it:

Hamburger steak in creamy mushroom onion sauce

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1 egg

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

salt and pepper

8 oz package mushrooms cleaned and sliced

1 small onion chopped

3 tbs flour

1/2 c white wine or broth

1 c heavy cream, half and half or milk

splash Worcestershire sauce

salt and pepper

water or broth to thin sauce as needed

Mix the ground beef with the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Form into patties (made 6 sizable patties). Fry until browned on both sides not cooking all the way through. Remove and set aside. In the same pan with the drippings fry the onion and mushrooms until soft and lightly browned. Add the flour and continue to saute until the flour is coating the onion and mushrooms. Add the white wine or broth stirring until combined and sauce has thickened. Add the heavy cream, half and half or milk and some Worcestershire sauce and cook until thickened. NOTE: if too thick add a little water or beef broth. Add the hamburger steaks into the sauce and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes on med low heat. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or noodles.
