Farewell Greg Hildebrandt. Hello Again ‘Heavy Metal’.

On Halloween, one of the most impressive, talented, and influential artists of the science fiction and fantasy worlds passed away at age 85: Greg Hildebrandt.

Hildebrandt was one half of the legendary Brothers Hildebrandt. He and his brother Tim Hildebrandt, who died in 2006, created some of the most iconic, imaginative and beautiful pieces of art in the fantasy, science fiction and horror worlds. This included art for Lord of the Rings, Marvel, and DC. The most well-known Star Wars poster to date was a one-day job because Lucas didn’t like a different poster from another source. They also did many covers for the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Illustrated Magazine”, Heavy Metal.

Heavy Metal also died for awhile in 2023. It ceased publication in April of that year due to sales issues and one former owner’s possible mistreatment of creatives.

This month, Heavy Metal is launching a Kickstarter to bring this juggernaut of sci fi, fantasy and horror back to its original glory. Greg Hildebrandt provided the amazing cover art for Issue #1 of its rebirth.

The re-launch of Heavy Metal Magazine Issue #1 (on left) will feature fantastic cover art by Greg Hildebrandt, who passed away Oct. 31. The Brothers Hildebrandt had a history of creating some of the magazines coolest covers.

Both the Brothers Hildebrandt and Heavy Metal were part of the every Gen X teen fantasy and sci-fi lovers’s life. The art is still admired, loved and imitated with new generations. I still remember when some kids would sneak in a copy to school belonging to their big brother or sister. It was pure rebellion! Whether or not you like the subject matter, Hildebrandt and Heavy Metal inspired many artists to create. Hildebrandt’s attention to everything from detail to visual storytelling was off the charts. I am looking forward to getting copies back out on the racks where they belong, but for now, a Kickstarter will have to do.

Shortly after Hildebrandt’s death was announced, Heavy Metal Magazine posted a beautiful tribute to him in their X (Twitter) feed:

“For over half a century, your artistry has carried us to places of wonder and imagination and your extraordinary gift for blending the ethereal with the tangible gave rise to worlds that felt both magical and real. Each piece was a journey, inviting exploration and awakening the imagination of everyone who encountered it.”

Godspeed to the next level, Mr. Hildebrandt.. Thank you for leaving us with another incredible piece of artwork. Let’s take once again take that “oneway ticket to midnight” with you.
