I’m calling the short film ‘Unification’ a must watch for several reasons. First of all, if you consider yourself a Star Trek fan in the tiniest bit, it’s rewarding. Come on. The return of Kirk! All the other cameos. It’s just cool. As short film, Unification works as well. Visually stunning.
Let’s talk about those visuals for a minute. Shatner, Nimoy and the A.I. of it all. That’s what blew me away. Those visuals were damn good. That was insanely close to the finish line in terms of being able to put whoever you want on screen and not being embarrassed with the end result. That’s a big moment. William Shatner as Captain Kirk on screen in a variety of age ranges and not only is it not cringe… it’s believable! Star Trek Unification is a bold step forward in terms of the possibilities of cinema.
A.I. characters appearing on screen is a slippery slope though. As the technology develops, what to stop people from putting whoever they want in whatever situation they choose? Presidents in bed with hookers? Marlon Brando in ‘Dumb and Dumber 14’. There will be no limit. William Shatner was a producer on Unification and the Nimoy family was onboard as well. But what happens when that isn’t the case? That bridge is approaching at warp speed. But for now, let’s enjoy the moment. The return of William Shatner as Kirk in Star Trek 765874 – Unification. It really is incredible.
