Cardamom, orange and chocolate ribbon cookies

Retro recipe that is delicious and festive. Layers of cookie dough that when sliced resemble ribbons or stripes. Wonderful with coffee or tea and a great addition to your holiday cookie repertoire. Here’s how to make it:

Cardamom, orange and chocolate ribbon cookies

makes approximately 30-36 cookies

1/2 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature

1/2 c vegetable shortening

1 c sugar

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1 large egg room temperature

2 tbs whole milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

3 c flour

zest of one orange

1/3 c (1 1/2 oz semi sweet chocolate melted

1/4 tsp cardamom

Beat butter and shortening with electric or stand mixer for 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking soda and salt and beat until combined. Beat in egg, milk and vanilla. Add flour and mix only until combined. Divide the dough in half, add the chocolate to half and knead the chocolate into one half and cardamom and orange zest into the other half. Line a 9x5x3 loaf pan with plastic wrap leaving enough on the sides so you can lift out easily (approximately 2-3 inch overhang). Divide both chocolate and vanilla dough in half (you will have 4 pieces). Press one piece of chocolate dough on the bottom, followed by the vanilla dough (press on top of chocolate layer) repeat ending with vanilla layer. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes. Pre heat oven to 375 degrees.

Remove from refrigerator and lift the dough out of the loaf pan. Divide (slice) into 3 equal pieces. Cut each third into approximately 12 slices (NOTE: I like them a little thicker so cut ten slices). Place cookies approximately 2 inches apart on parchment or silpat lined baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes and rotate the pan, bake for another 5-7 minutes. The cookies will not be browned total baking time is 10-12 minutes NO MORE. Let cool on cooling rack.
