The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. One of those stories that gets dusted off every Halloween. It’s eerie, a little frightening, and still pretty good after all these years!
But what if you sent the famous Ichabod Crane after the Headless Horseman… and he brought along his trusty (talking) steed Washington, plus their guide Rip Van Winkle and his dog Wolf? That’s exactly what you get in The New Misadventures of Ichabod Crane. A 1979 Canadian cartoon special that feels like a hidden gem among the usual Halloween lineup.
It’s packed with voices that immediately sound familiar if you grew up with the amazing “Nick at Nite” reruns of the 60s and 70s. First, we have The Amazing Kreskin who voices Ichabod. Then, Pat Buttram (yes, Mr. Haney from Green Acres) is Washington the horse. There is also George Lindsey (Goober from The Andy Griffith Show) voices the dog, Wolf. And Larry D. Mann is Rip Van Winkle (Yukon Cornelius from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer). Last but not least, there is Hazel Shermet (single episodes of Dragnet, The Addams Family, I Dream of Jeannie) plays the witch Velma van Dam.
The first time my dad showed me The New Misadventures of Ichabod Crane, those voices clicked right away. Green Acres, Andy Griffith, and that Christmas staple Rudolph all rolled into one weird little Halloween special. I still have the VHS he gave me… somewhere. Although, no way to watch it.
As an adult, the jokes land harder. Velma’s called an “old hag” more than once (something we probably couldn’t get away with quite so casually anymore), and there’s a healthy dose of slapstick that still makes me chuckle.

It’s not a straight retelling of the original story. More of a playful reimagining where the Headless Horseman has a secret and Ichabod ends up teaming up with some unlikely allies. But it’s full of that old-school cartoon energy that feels like a treat.
This Halloween, give this one a look. It’s available on YouTube and makes for a fun, nostalgic watch!
