We in the Free State of Florida are just finishing up our week of Spring Break. And while my week started off getting a nice outdoor lunch-time sunburn, I still spent some time this week reminiscing about the days during Spring Break as a kid in the 90s. And our abundant use of Clairol’s ‘A Touch of Sun’ highlight spray.

Spring Break growing up in Northern Nevada usually meant we were spending our time indoors. You can never fully count on warm weather in March. But we of course wanted it to look like we were out enjoying the sun on a beach somewhere, maybe up at Lake Tahoe. Or on vacation somewhere awesome with our families. But for the many of us who spent the week at home with our friends, we did what we had to do…
Spray our entire heads with ‘A Touch of Sun’ highlight spray and sit out in the sun (possibly in our jackets) in order to achieve those perfectly beach-blonde, sun-kissed highlights. The highlights we could only achieve while away on a beach vacation during Spring Break.

Another trick was to use your hair dryer to create the same effect. For those of us fully dedicated to the cause and highlighting during the nighttime hours as well. Usually during slumber parties.
Our moms would tell us, “you can achieve the same result just by coming lemon juice through your hair!”
But we chose not to listen. We just had to have this product that was being marketed to us young girls on TV and in magazines! Oh the money we wasted.

But highlights and the beachy-blonde look were all the rage in the 90s. We grew up with shows like Saved by the Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place. All shows that took place in sunny California where we were led to believe all the girls were beach-blonde babes!

And here people are… Still out purchasing old boxes of A Touch of Sun! While I wouldn’t recommend spending almost 50 bucks for a box, you can still buy the OG competing product, Sun In. As well as the not so retro brands like Sun Bum’s hair lightener. Now, go on and get a jump on your summer beach-blonde locks this Spring Break!
