Is Nickelback making a comback? According to a recent Joe Rogan Experience podcast, nostalgia is bringing back this polarizing band from the early 2000s.
The band formed in Alberta, Canada back in 1995. Liked by a lot, yet mocked by the rest. Nickelback became mainstream in the US and Canada in 2001 with their breakout hit, “How You Remind Me.” Oh my goodness, it’s been 25 years??!!
Nickelback was HUGE back in the early 2000s. I had “How You Remind Me” on repeat in my car’s janky cassette player (which, at the time, was actually just a portable cassette player with a speaker).
While I have always enjoyed their music, I can fully understand the hate.
They were just “too good.” Some will like you, others will despise you. It’s like being “too good looking.” A lot like Tom Brady. You either like him, or hate him. But you have to admit, he’s good looking.
So, “listener fatigue” is the term used for songs and artists that are over played on the radio. Back when DJs were the ones making the decisions on what songs the public got to listen to throughout the day. While extremely popular amongst fans, other listeners became tired of the “perceived formulaic sound, repetitive chord progressions and a nasal lead vocal style,” according to Know Your Meme. This exhaustion turned into jokes, memes, and formed a new class of music critic… The keyboard warrior type.
But apparently, some concert goers (seen here in Portugal) just formed genuine hate. But also, they paid to see Nickelback.
The band has continued to make music and tour worldwide over the past couple of decades. Clearly they have more fans than not. And we can’t stop talking about them! Their eleventh album is set to release October 30.
So, like them or hate them, Nickelback is coming back. And it appears they are here to stay.
