Hollywood has been cranking out the new Godzilla films for the past few years, filled with over-the-top CGI and very little story.
I love Godzilla and his fellow kaiju friends, but sometimes I get a little worn out from of the Hollywood “Monsterverse” treatment. Of course, they are following the formula for the modern “creature feature”, but it I always felt the old school Japanese “guy in a suit” Godzilla’s had much more heart.
Well, this December, Godzilla hits the United States with Japan’s latest installment: Godzilla: Minus One, and it looks super intense.
The movie was announced in 2022 on “the 68th anniversary “Godzilla Day” in November as a celebration of the badass kaiju’s 70th “birthday” in 2024.
Although the monster will be computer generated, it look is still maintains a love for the the original fun Godzilla suited actors we all love.
The movie, set in post-war Japan, is released by Toho Studios, who has created more than 33 Godzilla films. This latest installment is part of what they call the “Reiwa era” series, a term referring to films released the current political era of Japan. Godzilla Minus One will be the fifth film in this era, marked by a trilogy of fantastic Godzilla animes and the 2016 film Shin Godzilla.
I highly recommend checking the anime offerings on Netflix starting with 2017’s Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters just for fun. No, they aren’t prequels for the forthcoming movie.
You might have a little “kaiju” fatigue with so many of the new Hollywood Godzilla films being released of late, but it’s good to see the the films return home to the country of its origin.
Godzilla Minus One will be released in Japan on Godzilla Day, Nov 3, 2023 in Japan, then roar into U.S. theatres on Dec. 1.
