I had the privilege of spending the weekend with several young people in my family who ranged in age from 14 to 21, and learned some wonderful and sad things.
Although I was able to go out and experience the smiles and laughs of being around this generation, I also learned too many of them are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. I believe in being informed on social and political issues, as well as being able to take a stance, but I also feel you need to not squander your youth on worry and anger.
Once you stop scrolling through the Smart Phone and logging off the computer, you’ll find the simple fun of picking up a coffee, walking around the neighborhood or taking a small road trip are as essential as good nutrition or exercise.
Here are five music videos (one or two I may have shared a while back) that still convey the importance of celebrating and loving life.
Brian Fallon “A Wonderful Life”
Fallon’s ode the kind of love he wants may essentially be a romantic tune, but it also shows the attitude we should have towards everything:
“I don’t wanna survive, I want a wonderful life.”
The dude in the nifty hat dancing in front of the white lights: Be him.
James Blunt “Bonfire Heart”
This one always makes me smile because British singer/songwriter James Blunt filmed this over a two-day ride around Wyoming. No actors, just the people he met along the way star in this video. What a reminder that not everyone is arguing on the internet or in political forums.
Avicii “The Nights”
I am aware that the man behind this beautiful tribute to getting out there and making every day you can an adventure, took his own life before he was 30. This makes these lyrics and the vibe of this video even more important:
“Go venture far beyond the shores. Don’t forsake this life of yours.”
Ghost Hounds “Make It Shake”
I love the voice of rockin’ blues band Ghost Hounds, Tré Nation, but also the cool stock footage in this video that simply invites you to get up and dance like your feet are on fire. Happiness and celebration transcends generations and cultures. Join in the dance. You are invited.
Plain White T’s “Rhythm of Love”
The Plain White T’s were the first “all ages” concert I took my oldest daughter to, and they have a special place with me for that reason. Also, you might notice all of these videos show something in common: people enjoying the outdoors! I love concerts, video games, and movie nights, but seriously, whether you are looking for anything from romance to a great spot to read…get outdoors when the weather is fine! Our souls need that refill!
I always wish I could convey to my kids how much life has to offer without having to be rich or “influential”. As far as what these videos show, well, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
