Today is the 67th Birthday of artist and filmmaker Tim Burton.
One of the things I have always loved about Burton he knows how to merge his visual art style in everything he does. No matter what you think of the story he is telling, you can’t help but admire the way he tells it.
For example, the second season of his current hit Wednesday is getting some love and some criticism. There is one thing for me that stands out this season: a story told in his signature stop-motion animation style:
…and of course, this little bit of information moves along the plot for fans of the show.
For fans of Burton, like me, it was a nifty shoutout to one of his early gothic works. In celebration of Burton’s birthday, here are some pieces he did that are little less mainstream.
Vincent
Burton was a young animator at Disney in 1982, and made this stop motion short about a boy who fantasizes about being his idol, Vincent Price. Price, himself did the narration.
Frankenweenie..the live action
Burton’s stop-motion feature Frankenweenie was a huge hit, but do you remember the 1984 live action short on which it was based? It starred Barret Oliver of Neverending Story fame as Victor Frankenstein, with Shelley Duvall and Daniel Stern as his parents.
“Here With Me ” music video
In 2006, Burton directed a music video, “Bones” for the rock band The Killers. The band liked it so much they asked him to another one in 2012, and he brought Winona Ryder on board as “wax girl”. He also did a the video for Linkin Park and has one for Lady Gaga coming up.
His Commercials…
In 2016, Burton did a pair of ads for Timex and they are are epic. Here’s “Kung Fu” for Timex as well as “Garden Gnome” for Hollywood Chewing Gum going back to the 90s.
Finally, if you need some WTF…
“Hansel and Gretel” Nightmare Fuel
This was a 1983 Halloween piece he did for the old Disney Channel, but was considered a bit too weird for them. They it aired once and mysteriously disappeared for awhile. It resurfaced in 2012 and now has a strange cult following. I mean, what’s so weird about a live-action Japanese adaptation of a Brothers Grimm classic that includes Hansel, Gretel and the Witch battling it out kung fu style in the end? I’ve included the entire 30-minute special, but you might want to watch just a bit at a time.
“Nearly everything in this house is edible, my dear little cutlets!”
You might love him or hate him, but you can’t deny he has one of the most wonderful and weird artistic visions in the business…and his style is instantly recognizable and all his own.
Happy Birthday, you mad genius.
Lisa, Thanks for the great article about Tim Burton along with some cool videos too. His style and vision of directing especially in stop action animation fascinates me. Love Vincent and Frankeweenie. I have to say your article Post Concert Sadness/Why We Need People piece captured the exhilaration of a concert and sharing it with people you love or just met that night and then sadly it’s over. Sigh. The next part was poignant and shows we can do things out of our comfort zone and the need for human connection. A wonderful well written article
Thank you so much. I appreciate your comments!
I am glad you sharing my weird music and movie loves.
