There won’t be any spoilers here. I wouldn’t do that to ya. Why would I want to spoil the fun and the drama of that very rare thing…A really good television show. That’s what HBO’s ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is. Quality storytelling. I’m sold. I was sold really after episode 2 and that’s just fine.
You may remember that I reviewed the trailer and wasn’t too impressed with what I saw. I honestly had no idea what the show was going to be. And I say all of this as writer for television! What is going on here? I mean, I know who I’m pulling for in the broad sense but there were plenty of gaps and frankly the show didn’t look all too compelling. That’s fine. I gave the show a chance anyway and I’m so glad I did.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is to Game of Thrones what Andor was to Star Wars. At the root of both of those shows it’s about the people and if you care about them. It sounds simple but you’d be surprised how many shows fail that basic truth. Oh well. Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has me invested.
It’s good story telling! Simple as that. Nothing feels forced. Nothing is rushed or condensed or dumbed down. The show has a pace, and great characters and things have time to develop. It’s a rare thing in television and movies today. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has it in spades. Hat tip to the writers, Showrunner Ira Parker and HBO.
Here’s all you need to know. It’s one hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones. We’re introduced to a large, courageous fellow who’s trying to become a knight. He meets a small bald-headed kid who wants to be his squire. That’s it. No dragons. No magic. Just a guy trying to make his way in the world and the world has plans. That’s all I’ll say. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is legit. It’s worth a watch. I know I’ll have 2 episodes to watch this Sunday on HBO Max and I’m stoked. Highly recommend.
