Young Washington vs Supergirl. Box Office war? Kind of but not really.

Young Washington had a good weekend at the box office. The movie brought in around 21 million bucks and a number 3 finish, behind Minions and Monsters and Toy Story 5. Not too shabby. Reportedly, the budget for Young Washington was only 20 million. So that’s really good news for the flick.

As for Supergirl? Well, the Box office numbers weren’t much to brag about. After the first ten days in the theaters? Supergirl has brought in around 100 million. That’s rough. Supergirl’s budget was around 180 million. So… you can see how that is kind of problematic.

Now, this post is meant to undercut the excuses that are about to come out of Hollywood about superhero fatigue and what the movie going audience wants to see. They will try to make this about historical drama vs comic books. It’s actually much easier to figure out. It’s about stories people want to see. It’s about entertainment.

I haven’t seen Young Washington of Supergirl, but here’s how it looks from the sidelines. Young Washington is about a young man who becomes a hero. Supergirl is about an invincible drunk girl, coming to grips with her past. Now factor in that movie audiences have been treated to the ‘invincible’ girl boss movie again and again with Captain Marvel, Disney Star Wars, The Marvels, Etc. and I think you’ll see the pattern as well. It’s not comic book fatigue. It’s girl boss fatigue. It’s bad storytelling fatigue.

Again: I haven’t seen these movies. But once upon a time, both of these movies would compliment each other at the box office. IF they were both good! It’s not Young Washington vs Supergirl. They should both be doing well. Sadly, some schmuck is going to say it’s a fight between the 2 movies. Nope. If it’s good? People will watch it.

Check out the competition at the box office in 1978 when Superman by Richard Donner came out. Donner LOVED the character of Superman by the way, and it showed.

Are you kidding me? Look at this list! It’s all over the board!

Grease: The highest-grossing film of the year globally, still bringing in audiences to see John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: A major sci-fi thriller/horror remake that debuted in December 1978.
Every Which Way But Loose: A Clint Eastwood action-comedy that opened in mid-December and became a massive box-office hit.
The Deer Hunter: Released in limited engagement in December before going wide, ultimately winning the Academy Award for Best Picture.
National Lampoon’s Animal House: A defining comedy juggernaut that was still drawing crowds after its summer release.
The Wiz: The big-budget musical starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, which was finishing its initial theatrical run

So, let’s save the Supergirl vs Young Washington talk and just tell better stories. How about that?

Here’s the trailer for Young Washington. They are already planning a sequel because they aren’t idiots. LOL!
