Are we witnessing a return of common sense in the entertainment biz? Maybe. There is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Netflix put out a company memo that addressed the cancel-culture-happy workforce. Looks like the streaming giant has had enough. They let employees know that they won’t “censor specific artists or voices”. Cool. Good start. They went on to let employees also know that “If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” Skadoosh. If you don’t like it? There’s the door. That should have been the policy from jump street, but either way it’s refreshing to hear.
Let creators create. End of story. Don’t inject politics into a piece of art that doesn’t need it. And on the flipside: Don’t take politics out of a project just because you don’t like them. It’s easy. And yeah, if you don’t like it? Move on!
Here’s the question we have: How bad is Netflix hurting as a company that they had to make this move? They’ve lost a lot of subscribers and they don’t seem to have a lot of exciting projects on the horizon. And with the exception of ‘Stranger Things’ it feels like all they have is some stand up specials and Woke Documentaries. The memo feels like they are trying to course correct and let content creators know that the company won’t censor. It’d be a good start. But is it too late? We shall see.
