This 1968 interview with Tolkien should be required viewing for Rings of Power writers (video)

There is a depth to Tolkien and his work that is so cavalierly dismissed by a large portion of the entertainment community it’s insulting. The thought and care he put into his work is simply staggering. It’s a pleasure to watch this clip from a 1968 interview Tolkien did with the BBC and it should be required viewing for the Rings (rangs) of power writers. The Amazon show has an incredible lack of depth. A lack of purpose. It’s an insult to Tolkien. I don’t know how else to say it. What story is R.O.P. trying to tell? What is the theme? That bad ass bitches like Galadriel want revenge and they’ll get it not matter the cost? Is that our hero? Of all the stories they could attempt, that’s what they chose? Of course, Galadriel will have an arc. Her character will learn something along the way. She’ll become the Queen we all meet in L.O.T.R. But will viewers stick around? Not me. The show is just too insulting. It’s almost entirely pretty pictures that are nothing more than fan service. That’s the part that is so insulting. It’s as if the execs sit back and say “give em a wide shot of the two trees'” that’ll keep em happy. Then throw in a wide shot of Moria. They love stupid shit like that.” It’s the same shit Disney did with Star Wars. “Show em a new spaceship. The fans love that stupid shit.” Here’s a hint to all the condescending execs everywhere: We only love it if it means something. It’s not about the scenery or the ships or any of that crap. It’s about meaning and story and character. So, fuck all of you and your fan service. Watch this clip of someone who understood that. J.R.R. Tolkien. Hopefully you’ll learn something.
