It is hard to avoid how much record-breaking BTS members dominating the music world this year from their 10th Anniversary celebration to their just-released official biography, Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS that is already Number One on Amazon.
Documentaries. Solo concert tours. A new Guinness or Billboard record set pretty much every day. This isn’t just as a group, but as solo artists. Despite what you might of KPop in general, the work BTS has cranked out as solo artists alone definitely veers beyond what you’d expect.
Here are some examples of their solo sounds, starting with the two members currently serving their military time: Jin and J-Hope.
“The Astronaut” by Jin
This pleasant pop song reminds me of the late 80s style with a smooth sound and Tears for Fears-esque video, and it’s a shame he hasn’t done more yet. Well, he’s currently an assistant drill instructor, so he’s a little busy right now. I’m ready to hear more when he’s out.
“More” by J-Hope
J-Hope went in a completely different direction with his rap-heavy Jack In the Box CD with head-bangers like “Arson”. J-Hope is the first of BTS to headline Lollapaloza, and he gave an epic performance. His rap metal banger “More,” hit a little over a year ago and is still climbing.
“Set Me Free” by Jimin
Jimin’s solo album Face is everywhere right now, with an electronic pop and hip-hop mix. His song “Like Crazy” debuted at Number 1 the Hot 100 when it hit in April, and I recommend checking it out. “Set Me Free Pt. 2” was the first effort, and for me sets the tone of this album. No, there isn’t a Part 1.
“Cheek to Cheek” by V
Kim Taehyung (V) doesn’t yet have a solo album out, but one is expected out at the end of this year. He recently showed off his love of jazz standards with a small “Le Jazz de V” performance including “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”. His “Cheek to Cheek” with vocalist Minna Seo (who did a fantastic job) is a bit of a shout to that Tony Bennet and Lady Gaga team-up. Personally, I gotta give his excellent guitarist some props, too. Looking forward to what his album brings.
“Daechwita” from Agust D
Suga, who goes solo as Agust D, is probably one of the most mad talented guys out there, and picking an example of his work from his D-Day album was hard. Since I shared his badass “Haegum” with you all recently in my “They Chose Violence” post, I’ll shoe his pre D-Day hit “Daechwita”. This song just moves. Hard to believe this dude is 30 now.
“Lonely” by RM
Kim Namjoon is a complicated and brilliant dude, who has shared his extensive reading lists and his ripped workout sessions on his social. As the leader of BTS, and a chronic deep thinker, it’s ironic one of his hits is about being “fuckin’ lonely” and isolated. This pop/hip-hop song is both catchy and blunt. I catch myself singing it a lot.
“Still With You” by Jung Kook
I saved my “bias” of the bunch for last, because it is currently Jung Kook’s world. Pre-sales for “Seven,” the first single from forthcoming solo album hitting this year, sold out in less than an hour, and he broke the world record fastest solo K-Pop artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify in May..with only had about four or five songs at the time. Both Charlie Puth and FIFA should be glad they hitched their wagons to him for the hits “Left and Right” and “Dreamers” respectively. His “Still With You” is listed with BTS in videos (there is concert footage), but on his solo work on streaming. Jazzy, smooth and nice way to end this list.
Seriously, be on the lookout for this hottie…his preview of “Seven” just came out yesterday and is already over a million views.
Hope one of these caught your ears, but even if not, you can’t say these boys’ sounds aren’t diverse.
Here’s to another 10 years, BTS. See you when you start up again after the service in 2025.
