What’s Valentines Day without some beautiful love songs? Songs of devotion, loyalty, undying commitment and just a touch of obsession, vengeance, murder, and emotional manipulation.
No one does it better than some of the biggest female K-Pop idols, or those with a K-Pop following. With Valentine’s coming this week, here are some psychotically entertaining videos from crazy talented femme fatales of the K-Pop and K-Pop adjacent worlds:
“Monster Under the Bed” by Emily Mei
Emily Mei is a Los Angeles born and raised gal of Chinese heritage, and is talented in so many disciplines from acting to music and dance. She isn’t K-Pop per se, but has a huge following among K-Pop fans. She knows her way around lyrics in English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Spanish, and has a ghoulish love of the macabre. This twisty video featuring Russian-Korean actor, model, and musician Yuri Park was also directed by Park. Clips from this video on social media had a number of people unfamiliar with the artists asking if this was part of psychological thriller drama. From what I hear, Park and Mei would love to see this bloom into a full-fledged movie or series.
“Toxic Till The End” by ROSÉ
Hopefully by now you have heard of Rosé. Not only is she a member of arguably the most popular K-Pop girl group on the planet, Blackpink, but the lead track from her recent solo album, “Apt.” with Bruno Mars helped put her in the Guinness Book of World Records last month for highest charting female K-Pop artist on the US. Charts. Her album, Rosie, also debuted at Number Three on the Billboard 200, so she is doing pretty good for herself. I with I could say the same for her “Ex” (played by actor and skateboarder Evan Mock of Gossip Girl) she is using and abusing in another great single from this album. Don’t feel too bad, though, there’s some subtle mutual manipulation going on.
“나쁜년 (BIBI Vengeance)” by BiBi
Bibi is one of those performance-heavy artists who has a knack for creating dark and complex stories through her music. Honestly, there is a large helping of of crazy in most of her videos, but Hell Hath No Fury like a woman seeking vengeance…or just cash. The song’s Hangul title, 나쁜년 (pronounced Nap-peun-nyeon) means Bad Bitch/Crazy Bitch, so she’s ready to rumble. The object of her revenge is actor Hyun Bong-sik, a prolific and well-respected K-Drama and movie actor. He isn’t getting much respect here, but that’s okay. The vengeance is satisfyingly wicked.
“Peek-A-Boo” by Red Velvet
We’ve let the solo artists go a little crazy, so here’s a popular girl group who knows how to be collectively psycho. One of their big hits is even called “Psycho”. Yet, we’re ending this Valentine’s femme fatale list with a group of beautiful women who enjoy the hobby of trophy collecting. Before you get cozy with this girl group, men, please take a moment of silence and remembrance for the Pizza Boy.
This Valentine’s Day, boys, make sure when Cupid’s arrow strikes, it isn’t followed up with a shiny little dagger in your back.
