Gen X Sounds are Back with a Vengeance

So, the coolest news in the entertainment world wasn’t the airing of an increasingly insignificant trophy exchange, it was some new music, music videos, tours and album releases from 80s rock and pop icons.

In case you missed the memo, here are three music announcements worthy of the early days of MTV News:

Billy Idol is “Still Dancing”

As you might know, Billy Idol has announced his new North American Tour, “It’s A Nice Day to …Tour Again!” with opening act Joan Jett and the Blackhearts running from April to September:

Last week, he upped the ante with a new album announcement and new song and music video, “Still Dancing”. He’s still rocking, and the world is better for it!

Madness Moves Forward…in Reverse?

British ska and pop groundbreakers Madness have been sticking with it since the 80s, and this week they put out a new music video as fun as they always have been: “Mr. Apples.” This song was first released in 2016, but is back with a new video and the following announcement:

“Over the next year, we’ll be rolling out our catalogue in reverse on digital music services, stripping things back to their originals, picking out our favourite tracks, and unearthing some hidden gems.”

Sounds great guys! Let’s take it One Step Beyond.

Tears for Fears is Back on Cassette!

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one albums that really defined the sounds of the 80s: Tears for Fears’ Songs from the Big Chair. This multi-platinum album featured hits like “Shout,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Head Over Heals,” and is back on cassette for the first time since 1985.

This time, however, it’s in limited edition baby blue. I’ve owned this album on cassette, CD, and keep it on my Spotify playlist. Now, I might have to go full circle and get it on cassette again. Time to bust out the boom box.

There’s some talk on various music sites this one may also have some new bonus and/or hidden tracks, and other new released are being planned. That would be super cool, if true.

In the meantime, they did drop a new music video, “Emily Said,” last month, with some a nice chill sound and happy, weepy ending. I like it!

Remember how cool it was waiting for the new hit from your favorite group to drop on the radio, MTV, or Friday Night Videos? Even in this age of instant YouTube and Spotify gratification, these 80s sounds are giving me that old feeling again.

Keep sounding awesome, all! Gen X and every generation after is ready and waiting for what you’ve got in store.
