XDinary Heroes is Making Villains Worldwide

At the end of July, Korean rockers XDinary Heroes will make their Lollapalooza debut in Chicago, then start a North American and World Tour in August.

For those who don’t follow them, they might seem like they are being marketed as a K-Pop group. They are from Korea, and under the umbrella of the Record Label JYP (the entertainment company behind monster groups like Stray Kids). They have an official light stick and fandom name: Villains. Most recently the company announced the marketing of plush mascots, the XDinary Monsters, of which I will be happy to buy.

Okay, now forget everything I told you. XDinary Heroes are rockers. They have been together for a little under five years, and have dabbled pop punk, screamo metal, power ballads and rock opera.

Keep in mind the bulk of this band is hovering around age 23, with drummer Gunil the oldest at 27. This is a very young group to be successfully spinning off in so many different rock genres.

Just out of the teens they gave us this song were able to slip in a hidden F-Bomb when their company said that was no-no for their groups.

“Why do you kill my mood? If You Seek It, Why Owe You?”

Now, let’s jump ahead to the title track of their latest album. They bring us this little ditty quoting George Orwell that has no business being as good as it is for their age.

While other groups coming from Korea were collaborating with western hip-hop artists (which is completely cool), XDinary Heroes found Korean Gen X rock vocalist YB. He added his cover of “Sad But True” to the Metallica Blacklist album a couple of years ago, and gave XDinary Heroes some metal screams to this banger:

They are the only band I’ve seen to get a K-Pop loving audience to jam to covers by bands like Bring Me The Horizon and My Chemical Romance:

Having spent nearly 30 year writing about or working in publicity for performing arts, I have dealt with and seen a lot of musical acts of every genre. I’ve deejayed and played guitar in crappy bands. I have gone to more concerts than you can imagine from big band to country to punk to jazz and death metal…and everything in between.

So, believe me when I tell you I predict these talented hotties will be a legacy band someday if they stay on the road they are going. No matter where they come from or how old they are now, all you have to do is listen and know XDinary Heroes are something extraordinary indeed.
