It seems as if we’ve lost a lot of celebrities in just the past couple of months. And now, two different Superman alumni just this year: Gene Hackman and most recently, Terence Stamp. Stamp passed away this past Sunday, August 17. He was a well renowned actor from London, England, with a decades long film career. But what brought him the most popularity in the 80s was his role in Superman 2 as General Zod.
Having grown up a super fan-girl of the 80s Superman movies, I most know and remember Terence Stamp as General Zod and hands down believe he is the best portrayal of the supervillain. And according to a behind the scenes interview, Stamp never broke character while on set. Classic.
Although the second Superman film had its fair share of on-the-set drama, fans of the franchise will say that the villains made the movie. Due to 2 different directors having their hands on the film, there was a lot happening here. You had the Kryptonian criminals who were released from the Phantom Zone (accidently by Superman himself). Lex Luthor, who is still out to see the end of Superman. And then this whacky love story between Superman and Lois Lane that sends Superman spiraling into the desire to become mortal. So yes, I can understand the highlight being the storyline with General Zod and his comrades.
Once social media caught wind of the passing of Terence Stamp, the memories, thoughts, and prayers came pouring in.
The world owes a kneel before Zod, for your role as the general. Thank you, Terence Stamp, and may you rest in peace.
