Well, Supergirl appears to be headed to the Superdud category. The studio has (once again) lowered the box office projections or expectations. They now think that Supergirl will make around $39 to $51 million on its opening weekend. That’s down from the earlier projections of $77 to $100 million. Oh, and the budget for Supergirl was around $175 million. Ouch. So, what happened?
Well, lots of things really. One? People weren’t clamoring for a Supergirl movie in the first place. Two? Interviews with the star now seem to be overloaded with a political agenda. Three? The movie going audience is tired of all of the above.
Now, there is still a chance that the movie is good. The series that the movie is based on looks like it was pretty awesome. ‘Supergirl, woman of tomorrow’ gets rave reviews. But here’s the deal with that: It was a Supergirl story for people who already new Supergirl. With a movie? It’s an introduction. I don’t think movie goers are stoked to see what appears to be another overpowered female lead go on some revenge story and beat up all the bad men out there.
Ask, Captain Marvel. Ask Rey from Star Wars. Ask Atomic Blonde. Ask Ballerina. Ask Birds of Prey. Ask a bunch of these movies that fit in that category. Now again: Maybe the source material can save Supergirl. Right now, though? It’s looking bleak. And these clips that are circulating on the internet aren’t helping.
And now we’re back into that familiar territory of what Hollywood needs to do. Entertain. Tell good stories and respect the audience and the source material. In the case of Supergirl? I think the source material will be represented well. It’s just not the introduction to Supergirl that massive audiences want.
Maybe it will do okay on streaming services, but it looks like less and less people want to pay big bucks to see Supergirl in the theaters. The movie opens June 26. Yikes!
