A NYC favorite and an alternative to a Philly cheese steak. The chopped cheese sandwich is found in bodegas primarily in upper Manhattan and the outer boroughs and is recently receiving nationwide attention. Served on a hoagie roll the sandwich contains, ground beef, onion, garlic, American cheese, bell pepper, seasoning (some use adobo or sazon) I use worcestershire sauce. Mouthwateringly delicious, messy and so satisfying. I made homemade rolls using the simple recipe I posted here a few weeks ago. Here’s how:
Chopped cheese sandwich
1 lb ground beef 80 or 85%
1 small onion chopped
1/2 bell pepper chopped
1/2 tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
splash of Worcestershire sauce
sliced American cheese (approximately 4 slices)
mayonaise, lettuce and tomato
hoagie rolls grilled
On a grill or in a large skillet coated with olive oil saute the onion and bell pepper just until tender, add the ground beef, garlic powder, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, saute until meat is cooked through, lightly browned, lay slices of cheese on top of the meat and when cheese starts to melt chop with a spatula until the cheese melts into the meat. Grill your buns, slather top half of your bun with mayonnaise, spoon the meat and cheese on the bottom half of the bun, top with lettuce, sliced tomato and enjoy, make sure to grab extra napkins.
