The San Gennaro street fair/festival is a NYC institution. From September 12-22 Little Italy will be lined with food stands or trucks and thousands of hungry people, its a must visit if you are in NYC in September. Sausage, peppers and onions on a chewy roll, Italian subs loaded with mortadella, gabagool (lol), prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, zeppoles (fried dough) warm and dusted with powdered sugar, cannoli are just a few of the culinary delights available. You don’t have to be in NYC or at the feast of San Gennaro to enjoy a sausage and pepper hoagie. Make it at home on the stove top, on a sheet pan in the oven or on the grill anyway you choose, you will love it. Here’s how to make it:
Sausage, peppers and onions on a roll
bell peppers (as much as you like) I used yellow, red and orange mini bell peppers
1 onion cut in half and thinly sliced
cherry tomatoes halved (optional)
Italian sausage (sweet, hot or both)
rolls, (hoagie, ciabatta)
olive oil for pan
Heat olive oil on a grill or skillet, add the peppers, onions and tomato (if using), salt and pepper a generous pinch of each. Saute just until softened. Remove from skillet and brown the sausage on all sides, add the onion and tomato back in the pan with the sausage, cover and cook on low flame for approximately 20 minutes until the sausage is well done. Slice your rolls, scoop out some of the oil and drippings and brush on the roll or place the rolls cut side down in the pan to warm them, place a sausage some peppers and onions on the roll and enjoy. Cheese is optional, provolone would be nice.
